Jake Bugg

Ok so now I'm about to talk about one of the fastest rising stars in music right now. He's Jake Bugg, and he's just 18 -I just realized that he shares with same-aged Justin Bieber the initials of his name, they don't share the same talent though- he's into country music but with some very pop choruses, which is fantastic.

Not only Jake's the proof that we youngster can still make some very enjoyable songs without sinths but we can also write some deep lyrics  "fill my head with the future/fill my eyes with the sky
whole of my life I've been left behind but I've never felt more alive./ High speed conversations
speeding on down the line/looked in your eyes said the saddest goodbye but I've never felt more alive" ("Taste It"). All right it's not Kashmir or Dylan, but he's just 18!

He makes the kind of music that you'd expect from some 60 and something years old guy... or from Seth Lakeman or the La's. But actually like him or not he shows in my opinion that there's still hope for music. It's like a flower growing between the wasteland created by Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, One Direction &co.

Teenage Fanclub

Teenage Fanclub is one of those bands such as the Monkees which never gained a particularly big commercial success but where in a way responible for a change in the music environment. I'm talking about grunge when grunge didn't even exist!

Those guys from Glasgow resume in the late Eighties the musical trend of the whole 90s, quoted by Kurt Cobain as one of his favourite bands even Noel Gallagher said about them that they were the best band out there (except Oasis obviously).

It's funny the fact that they're from Glasgow because this only stresses the fact that Glasgow is one of the few cities out there to have this always innovative music scene, which is amazing!
I mean, from legendary music producer Alan McGee to Primal Scream in the early 80s, to Franz Ferdinand (<--- totally love them!!) eraly 00s and now a new indie path formed by Biffy Clyro and Glasvegas. It must be something about the city, but it's totally cool!

But back to Teenage Fanclub, well it just should be the band to listen to if you like grunge. I can find a relation listening to them with REM  and some Nirvana songs (especially the In Utero stuff), and even some echoes in Stone Temple Pilots.

If you want to give it a hit try and listen to "it's all in my mind" and "hang on". Just to hear one of the bands who influnced the contemporary music scene!

Beatles tra anni 60 e indie

Giorni fa ho visto quel film strepitoso che si intitola Restless-L'amore che resta, si Gus Van Sant. Stre-pi-to-so! Van Sant è un'ottimo regista, ma mi hanno molto stupito gli attori protagonisti, Mia Wasikowska ed Henry Hopper (figlio del defunto Dennis). Ovviamente consiglio vivamente questo film a tutti, racconterei la trama, ma mi dilungherei troppo dallo scopo di questo post, ovvero parlare della canzone di apertura del film.
Premetto che l'intera colonna sonora è indie-rock, con alcune canzoni composte dalo stesso Van Sant, quindi anche la canzone d'apertura pensavo che facesse parte di quel filone indie rock sul genere di Bombay Bicycle Club. A fine film vado a controllare su internet e scopro che si tratta niente di meno che dei BEATLES! la canzone si intitola "Two of Us", non l'avevo mai sentita prima anche perchè non sono quel che si può definire una "cultrice" dei Beatles. Sembrava assolutamente qualcosa uscito da al massimo un paio di anni, la canzone di un nuovo e misconosciuto gruppo indie. Questa canzone mi ha fatto capire un  cosa molto importante: l'effettiva influenza che questo gruppo ha avuto sulla musica moderna, e non parlo in astratto. Perchè Jim Morrison adorava Elvis Presley, ma i Doors e la loro musica avevano poco a che fare con le canzoni del Re del Rock, così come Nirvana ed Abba e potrei citare tanti altri esempi.

Invece, gruppi come i sopracitati Bombay Bicycle Club, ma potrei azzardare anche i Wombats, Two Door Cinema Down e Franz Ferdinand (almeno per quanto riguarda "Eleanor") hanno ripreso sonorità, modi di scrivere testi, giri di chitarre ecc. dai Beatles. E scusate se per voi questa non è una novità, ma per me significa capire effettivamente la portata di questo gruppo al di là di Beatles Mania, ragazzine urlanti, droghe e "Across the Universe".
Direi che ormai condivido pienamente quanto detto da quelli che dicono che i Beatles sono la band più importante della storia della musica.

Lana Del Rey

Ovviamente era ora che parlassi del nuovo fenomeno della musica indie, Lana Del Rey. La ragazza è esplosa in modo molto rapido a livello mondiale scatenando varie malelingue che la criticavano per la sua voce ed il modo di cantare e soprattutto per il suo aspetto fisico. Cosa penso di questa nuova super star? Beh non mi piace. Sì lo so che ho scritto ultimamente diversi post su gruppi che non apprezzo, ma a Lana va riconosciuta una capacità, cioè saper scrivere canzoni. Per semplificare il concetto la si può paragonare a Bob Dylan (sì lo so suona come una bestemmia, ma tant'è!). Bob Dylan scrisse canzoni immortali, ma molto spesso le cover di altri artisti erano migliori dell'originale -vedi "All along the Watchtower" rifatta dagli U2 o da Jimi Hendrix- ecco lo stesso principio vale per Lana Del Rey. La sua canzone "Videogames" è piuttosto deprimente in originale, ma le cover fatte da diversi gruppi sono molto meglio. La mia preferita tra tutte è -ovviamente- quella dei Kasabian, che ridanno brio al testo, e rendono la canzone molto bella ed emozionante.
Il processo inverso invece è piuttosto deludente. Lana del rey ha fatto una cover della canzone "Goodbye Kiss" dei quattro di Leicester... una delusione. La canzone già piuttosto lenta per gli standard dei Kasabian, diventa infinita e con la voce lagnosetta di Lana è insopportabile, l'ascolto è sopportabile solo per il primo mezzo minuto.
In conclusione grazie a Lana del Rey per aver scritto una canzone le cui cover sono meglio dell'originale, e grazie i Kasabian per essere inimitabili!!

CALLA

Due righe sulla mia ultima scoperta, che poi non potrei neanche chiamare tale... Non chiedetemi come ci sono arrivata (storia troppo lunga e contorta)... Ma se vi piace la musica elettronica tipo primi Kasabian o Black Onassis allora provate a sentire la band CALLA. Si sono formati a New York nel '97 e li trovate su youtube così:

(sono talmente di nicchia che se li cercate senza il titolo di una canzone neanche li troverete -esperienza-). Questa canzone intitolata "Astral" è l'unica meno elettronica e che mi piace un pò di più. Se volete solo sintetizzatori provate con "June" e "Awake and Under". A me non piacciono, ma non si sa mai!! Buon Ascolto!!!
